Naruto, written and illustrated by Masashi Kishimoto, is a shonen, fantasy adventure. It tells the story of Naruto Uzumaki, an orphan boy who dreams of becoming the Hokage, the greatest ninja in his village. However, the ninja world is filled with danger, and Naruto has the spirit of a nine-tailed fox demon sealed inside of him.

Naruto begins with the titular ninja learning the basics of ninjutsu from his school. While the results are obviously exaggerated in the series, real ninja had training regiments and schools of their own. If you'd like to see the sorts of things that they learned, check out Antony Cummins and Yoshie Minami's translation of the Shoninki, an authentic ninja training manual.

Naruto's first opening theme, "ROCKS", was performed by the rock band Hound Dog. Its visuals depict the series in its infancy, with Naruto taking on missions as a fledgling ninja alongside the rest of his team. While later story arcs would refine the series' style and tone, early Naruto won audiences over with its flawed, relatable characters and its harsh, ninja-centric setting.

Naruto's fifth opening theme, "Rhapsody of Youth" (also known as "Seishun Kyousoukyoku"), was performed by the rock band Sambomaster. Its visuals depict a turning point in the original series, where the once friendly rivalry between Naruto and Sasuke turns toxic. It raises an important question: "How far should you go to help someone who doesn't want to be helped?"
