Creative Writing (Novels & Novellas)

A guide dedicated to writing long-form fiction, including novels, novellas, and more.

Crafting Settings

"If the walls could talk... they'd probably ask you to stop poking things into them. Once you agree to their conditions, however, I'm sure they'd have plenty of stories to tell.

"Here's the thing: most books on creative writing mark a distinction between characters and settings; heck, that's something I've done with this very LibGuide. However, the two aren't as different from each other as they seem. An ornate castle, covered in dust and cobwebs, is just as much of a character as the vampire that calls it home. The only real difference is that a setting is acted upon while characters are the actors.

"Which poses an interesting question: is it possible for a character to be so passive that they become a setting? I don't mean like the film, Fantastic Voyage, which takes place inside someone's body. I mean like a story that takes place 'around Carl'. Does that make any sense? No?

"We'll figure that one out later. In the meantime, let's build a great stage for our actors to perform on."
