Creative Commons Search

  • Creative Commons is a global nonprofit organization that enables sharing and reuse of creativity and knowledge through the provision of free legal tools. This search interface allows you to locate a wide variety of digital resources with Creative Commons licenses.

Open Clip Art

  • Founded in 2004, Open Clipart is an online media collection of more than 160 000 vectorial graphics, entirely in the public domain.

Wikimedia Commons

  • Wikimedia Commons is a media file repository making available public domain and freely licensed educational media content (images, sound and video clips) to everyone, in their own language. The license conditions of each individual media file can be found on their description page.

Art Institute of Chicago

  • The Art Institute of Chicago website supplies background information and metadata, including copyright information on its images.

Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art

  • Crystal Bridges supplies some images with metadata, but copyright information does not seem to be supplied...at least not with all images on this site.

Library of Congress: Prints & Photographs Online Catalog

  • The collections of the Prints & Photographs Division include photographs, fine and popular prints and drawings, posters, and architectural and engineering drawings.

The Metropolitan Museum of Art

  • The Metropolitan Museum of Art presents over 5,000 years of art from around the world for everyone to experience and enjoy. Millions of people also take part in The Met experience online.

The [British] National Gallery

  • Search or browse the collection of over 2,600 paintings.  The scans are good and a considerable bit of background information is supplied with images.  However, copyright information is not always available.

National Gallery of Art

  • Search the entire National Gallery of Art collection by artist's last name, key words in the title, key words in object information, credit line, provenance name, accession number, exhibition history, and/or catalogue raisonné.

National Museum of the American Indian

  • Browse or search through high-quality image scans of a range of cultural and commercial pieces related directly to the various indigenous peoples of North America.

National Museum of Women in the Arts

  • The National Museum of Women in the Arts (NMWA) is the first museum in the world solely dedicated to championing women through the arts.

Rijksstudio

  • Rijksstudio is a portion of the national museum of the Netherlands museum's website that makes many downloadable images available to the public along with copyright information.

San Francisco Museum of Modern Art

  • This site is a little challenging to navigate, but it's included to ensure some representation of modern art.
