Faculty Resource Hub

Centralized location for faculty resources and support

Resources in the E. Allen Gordon Library digital collections can be utilized in online course delivery.  Faculty must adhere to Fair Use guidelines to ensure they are using the materials in a manner that complies with the permissions and limits of fair use.

Questions regarding Fair Use can be directed to the Library Director.

Below are instructions for including a streaming video file, streaming video segment, and research article in Blackboard.

Understanding Persistent Links

Have you ever been contacted by students claiming that they could not complete an assignment you posted in Blackboard because your link(s) was/were not working?

When this occurs, it is sometimes due to incorrect link selection.  Occasionally, faculty will place what is known as a "session link," rather than a "persistent link".

Did you copy your link from the web browser window?  If so, you probably copied a session link.

Session links (as their name implies) are tied to a particular research session.  Thus, they work when you initially test them (because you're usually still in the middle of the original research session!) but will often return error messages when later clicked on.

Persistent links, in contrast, are tied to particular pieces of information, so they will always link to the information after the session has ended and regardless of where the user is accessing the link from.

Unfortunately, there is no standard way of referring to persistent links.  EBSCO databases use "Permalink," while ProQuest databases call them "Document URLs."  Films on Demand uses "Record URL" and you may encounter other variations.

Regardless of the specific terminology,  the bottom line is that if you want to drop a link to a resource into Blackboard for your students...you need to use the persistent link.

If you need assistance locating and/or identifying the persistent link for a given resource, please feel free to reach out to the Library Director.
